What Is Faith?

What is faith? The question is a lot harder to answer than most people think. I have found over the years that there is a wide perspective on the topic. As a matter of fact I have found that there are a lot of misconceptions towards the topic of faith. Faith defined by secular standards is, a complete trust or confidence in someone or something. The biblical definition of faith is, a belief in or a confident attitude, towards God, involving a commitment to His will for one’s life.

Faith is a lot more than just believing in something! There are many who believe that there is “a” God. There are many who acknowledge that God exists. James 2:19-20 confirms this truth when He said, “You believe that there is a one God. You do well. Even the demons believe-and tremble.” Here we see it is not enough to just believe that God exists! The Living God will not settle for mere acknowledgement of His Existence!

True Faith involves a commitment to living out Gods will for our lives! Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) tells us’ “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what do not see.” Our confidence as believers is in Gods Character: He is who He says He is! Our assurance derives from His Word: He will do what He said He will do! When we believe and trust that God will fulfill His promises even when we cannot see or understand, we demonstrate true faith! As believers of Christ our hope is not dependent upon what we see, 2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us, “For we live by faith not by sight.”

Why is this important? It’s an important truth to understand because the Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:6, “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” It takes faith to please God! God desires our complete reliance be upon Him, in all things, and in every situation. When we do this, God makes His power known to us! I am convinced it’s our obedient trust that allows us to experience the power of Gods Hand move in our lives.

I am not sure where you are at in your walk with God? However, I want to encourage you, with the words of the Apostle Paul found in 1 Timothy 6:12 “Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (emphasis added) Keep fighting, keep pressing, for the just shall live by faith, and we are not of those who draw back! Remember, by faith, God’s not done with you yet!

The Best is Yet to Come!
